Brenner Children’s Emergency Department (ED) accesses the only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center in North Carolina and we’re the only pediatric emergency department in the region. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Brenner’s pediatric emergency team provides comprehensive emergency care to more than 29,000 infants and children each year. Children are not just small adults – our doctors are expertly trained to provide immediate medical care to children of all ages and our emergency department is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and diagnostic tools designed to match the specific requirements of pediatric patients. And, most importantly, at Brenner’s pediatric ED, you will always be seen by a doctor trained in emergency care, as well as by our support staff of highly experienced nurses and physician assistants.

What is the Brenner Difference? It’s more than just the fact that we’re the only pediatric emergency department in the region, dedicated solely to providing emergency care for pediatric patients. It’s more than just our devices and diagnostic tools, which are designed and sized specifically to meet the requirements of children.

It’s our people. Everybody that works at Brenner’s pediatric ED is focused just on the care of children in need. Our attending physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals are all dedicated to making sure that the right child gets the right treatment for his or her size and medical need.

Specialized Transport for Pediatric Patients

Brenner’s specialized pediatric transport team serves 20 counties in western North Carolina. Each year, hundreds of children are transported to Brenner’s pediatric ED via Wake Forest Baptist’s specially equipped transport ambulances and AirCare, the Wake Forest Baptist helicopter transport system. Wake Forest Baptist’s transport team consists of experienced registered nurses and respiratory therapists who specialize in the care of critically ill children and one of just 3 critical care transport teams in North Carolina that is capable of transporting a baby on Inhaled Nitric Oxide (INO).
