Pediatric Surgery at Wake Forest Baptist
With three board-certified pediatric general surgeons — the largest pediatric surgical department in the western half of North Carolina — Brenner Children’s Hospital offers advanced techniques for pediatric surgery, including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. As adult patients have long known, the benefits of this approach include shorter recovery periods and length of hospital stay, and less pain and scarring. For children, the benefits of laparoscopic surgery in a pediatric hospital include the presence of a full range of pediatric specialists — anesthesiologists, nurses and pharmacists — each trained specifically to care for children.
Laparoscopic surgery is most commonly used to remove organs such as the spleen, gallbladder, and appendix; in anti-reflux operations; to place feeding tubes into infants; and to evaluate hernias. Thorascopic surgery is used to treat chest infections and evaluate and biopsy lung disease and other chest disorders.
Seven suites in the Surgery Center at Brenner Children’s Hospital are dedicated to pediatric surgery. Brenner Children’s Hospital houses the busiest pediatric surgical center in Western North Carolina and is one of only three pediatric surgical centers in the state.
Additional specialties in pediatric surgery offered at Brenner Children’s Hospital include orthopaedic surgery, to treat such disorders as scoliosis and cerebral palsy, and plastic or reconstructive surgery, including the treatment of children with cleft lips or palates. We also offer state-of-the art pediatric neurosurgery options for the treatment of brain tumors, epilepsy, and other neurological conditions.
