It’s hard to imagine, but working at the computer for hours and hours can cause injuries. That sounds funny, but it does happen. There are several types of problems that are called repetitive strain injuries. If you think about it, you are doing the same motions with your body for hours at a time at the computer. At some point, parts of your hands, arms and back can get hurt. To take that strain off of your body, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Put your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest.
  2. Support your back with a good chair or pillow.
  3. Keep your wrists resting so that they are not extended up or down.
  4. Make sure that the monitor screen is lined up with your forehead and about 18 inches away.
  5. Get up and move around so that you don’t stiffen up. Ask your parents to help you set up the work area so it is comfortable for you. You don’t want to have to strain any part of your body, your back, your wrist, your arms or your eyes. Kids get these same kinds of injuries playing video games, playing musical instruments and doing some sports like tennis. Tell your family if you think you have gotten a repetitive strain injury.
