Bike Safety

It’s hard to find a bicycle helmet that looks cool – no doubt about it. But people who work in a hospital emergency department can tell you what they see all the time – head injuries and even deaths of kids who did not wear helmets. They are not a fashion statement, unless you can come up with something original. Don’t forget that bikes follow the same rules as cars if you are riding down the road. Also, watch for the people who aren’t watching for you, like those making sudden turns or coming in and out of driveways. Make your helmet a habit.

Car Safety

Speaking of fashion statements and habits, seat belts are essential. You should always wear a seat belt when riding in a car. Time and again you read and hear reports about people being thrown from cars because they were not wearing a seat belt. Not too long ago, a story out of Florida told of three people in a wreck – the two who were not wearing seat belts died and the third who was lived. Happens all the time.

ATVs and Motorcycles

Drivers and passengers on ATVs and motorcycles all need helmets. If you are riding on the road, motorcyclists are required by law to wear them. The reasons are very obvious. But also, remember that ATVs have a tendency to tip over. That can be dangerous, particularly when you ride them all over the place, not just the road.
