Television, computers, video games and concerns about safety are working against children these days in the area of physical fitness. It used to be that kids roamed the neighborhood until dark, but those days are generally gone. Parents are concerned about their children’s whereabouts. Two-job families may mean parents are not home until late. And children are spending more and more time in front of television, computer and video screens than ever before.
Keeping your child fit is important for many reasons, including general well being. Fit children are less likely to get sick, overweight and depressed. What can you do as parents to encourage your children to get up from the television? The good news is that physical fitness programs such as sports for children are booming right now. Organized sports like soccer have given families lots of options that never existing before, especially for girls. As a parent, you want to work with your children in all areas of exercise, aerobic, strength and flexibility. If time is tight, try and do things like walking, biking or running with your children before school or on weekends. Look into organized sports at YMCAs, recreation centers and schools. Even retailers like sports supply stores carry flyers and information about organized programs and classes.
As with everything, set a good example for your children to show them how important you consider exercise. And do your best to make it fun for your children.
