Choosing the right doctor for your child is extremely important. When deciding on a pediatrician or a pediatric specialist consider the following:

• Two of the most important qualities you should look for are competence and compassion. 

• Board certification, which means that a physician has done a residency in a particular specialty, is one credential to check.  

• Check the physician’s credentials with the state medical association and with the American Board of Medical Specialists.  

• Ask about the doctor’s experience with particular procedures. Does the doctor specialize in the illness or procedure facing your child? How many of these procedures does the doctor perform each year? 

• Ask friends or relatives if they know of others who have been seen by the doctor in question. Phone the parents of these children to find out what their experiences have been.
