Joseph Skelton, MD
Dr. Skelton is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Brenner Children's Hospital. He is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Directs the Brenner FIT program as well as the Family Obesity Research Center (FORCe). Prior to coming to Brenner Children's Hospital, he was director of one of the nation's largest pediatric weight management programs.
A native of East Tennessee, Dr. Skelton received his undergraduate degree from Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and completed his training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is active in community outreach, and researches better ways to reach families interested in improving their health. He is the father of 2 young boys.
Gail Cohen, MD, MS
Dr. Cohen is one of the physicians with Brenner FIT, and is a general pediatrician at Brenner Children's Hospital and the Downtown Health Plaza, a part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Wake Forest School of Medicine. She is a native of Southern California, received her undergraduate degree at University of California, Berkeley, and received her medical degree at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Cohen completed her training in Pediatrics and Fellowship in clinical research at Virginia Commonwealth University. She participates in a diverse set of research initiatives and teaching. She enjoys reading and traveling, and is the mother of 2 young girls.
Katie Boles, RD, LDN
Katie Boles, Registered Dietitian, works closely with families looking to improve their health and nutrition behaviors. Katie coordinates our telemedicine program, TeleFIT. Through TeleFIT, Brenner FIT services are provided to rural populations unable to travel to Winston-Salem, NC. She received her BS degree in Foods and Nutrition from Appalachian State University and completed her RD internship at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Along with being one of our registered dietitians, Katie is also a Zumba® and ZumbAtomic® instructor for both our Brenner FIT families and for the surrounding community.
Melissa Moses, MS, RD, LDN
Melissa Moses, Registered Dietitian, provides nutrition education support for children and families in the Brenner FIT program. Melissa teaches cooking classes, gives grocery store tours, and provides nutrition education to families within Brenner FIT and for the surrounding community. Melissa attended Appalachian State University, where she earned her BS in Foods and Nutrition. She obtained her MS in Nutrition Sciences at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Melissa previously worked in the inpatient setting where she gained a wide knowledge on Medical Nutrition Therapy for all ages. She has a passion for children and a love for nutrition which makes this job the perfect fit. Melissa loves spending time with her husband, family, friends, and 2 cats. She enjoys weekend outings to the local farmer's market, spending time outdoors, playing sports, and cooking/baking in her spare time.
Dara Garner-Edwards, MSW, LCSW
Dara provides support to families in the Brenner FIT clinic and coordinates the clinical care portion of the Brenner FIT program. She received her B.S. in Psychology and her Masters in Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill, and Dara is a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. Her career has focused on supporting family health and encouraging healthy feeding dynamics. With 3 children at home, she has daily examples of the challenges of parenting in a hectic world, making her ready and able to assist with parenting dilemmas of Brenner FIT families. For fun, Dara enjoys spending time with her family and travelling to the beach or the mountains.
Christine Jordan, EdS, LMFT
Christine Jordan supports families to create healthy lifestyles in our Brenner FIT clinic and group trainings. Christine received a B.S. degree from Clemson University and Ed.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Converse College. Her special interests include early childhood feeding and parenting support and education. She is a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. At home, Christine enjoys spending time with her family and riding horses.
Angelica Guzman, BA
Spanish-language Project Manager
Angelica Guzman is the Project Manager with Brenner FIT Mejor Salud-Mejor Vida program, working with Spanish-speaking families in clinic and the community. She is also involved with community-based research projects. She was born in Santiago, Chile, where she obtained her degree in Family Therapy. In January 2004 she moved to Winston Salem, North Carolina, with her husband and four children. Spanish is her native language and her passion is working with Latino families. She is a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. Cooking & Nutrition are her preferred subjects. She enjoys spending time with her kids and husband; especially watching her sons' soccer games.

Ella también trabaja en proyectos de investigación basados en la comunidad. Angelica nació en Santiago, Chile, donde obtuvo su título de Terapeuta Familiar. En Enero del 2004, ella se mudó a Winston Salem, North Carolina, con su esposo y cuatro hijos. Su lengua nativa es el español y su pasión es trabajar con familias Latinas. Ella está certificada como Educadora de Padres en Disciplina Positiva. Cocina y Nutrición son sus temas favoritos. Lorri Busby, MSW
Family Support Specialist
Lorri Busby supports families in Brenner FIT even before they step foot in clinic by providing phone coaching to get them started. Through the phone coaching process, Lorri helps families to identify community resources that will help them as they make changes. She received her MSW in Social Work from New York University in New York. Lorri is married and has seven grown children and one grandson. For fun, she enjoys thrift store treasure hunting, reading, and getting together with her family.
Sherry Frino, PT
Shery Frino encourages families to add more movement and play into their daily lives. She also helps children overcome problems with exercise, such as pain and injuries. Sherry received her BA in Physical Education from the UNC at Chapel Hill (Go Heels!) and BS in Physical Therapy from Winston-Salem State University (Go Rams!). Sherry enjoys distance running and working outside in her yard. At home, her active kindergartener and interest in photography keep her busy.
Casey Hicks, BS
Casey Hicks encourages families to add activity into their daily routine. She received her BS in Health Promotion from Appalachian State University and after completing an internship with Brenner FIT, Casey joined the team! Prior to working with Brenner FIT, Casey shared her passion for helping families enjoy physical activity by teaching gymnastics, and preschool physical education. Casey enjoys spending time with her family, finding deals at yard sales, and caring for her two dogs at home.
Sara Lynn Ebbers, MSW
Community Program Coordinator
Sara Ebbers leads the community outreach initiatives for Brenner FIT, and coordinates the Kohl's Family Collaborative Program. Sara received her BA in English and Philosophy/Religion from James Madison University, and her MSW from Boston College. Sara has focused on family development and wellbeing throughout her career, including time in wilderness education, churches, and hospitals. In her spare time, Sara enjoys backpacking and snowboarding.
Megan Bennett Irby, BS, MS, MS
Exercise Physiologist & Research Program Manager
Megan is the research program manager for Brenner FIT, who leads all research endeavors in the clinic and the community. She also serves as an exercise specialist for Brenner FIT, working with families to address their physical activity goals. Megan received a BS in Health and Exercise Science from Wake Forest University, a MS in Exercise Physiology from UNCG, and a MS in Clinical and Population Translational Science at Wake Forest University. She is currently a PhD candidate in Human Development and Family Studies at UNCG, and has a great interest in family relationships and the roles that families play in the development of nutrition and activity behaviors.
Deborah serves as the primary contact for all questions about Brenner FIT in the clinic and community setting. She is here to help families, community members, and physicians with referrals, appointments, registrations, and general questions about Brenner FIT. At home she loves to read, exercise, and spend time with her daughters.
