Click here to take a virtual tour of the Brenner Children's Hospital

In May of 2002, the Brenner Children’s Hospital, which opened in 1986 with a generous donation from the Brenner Family, moved into a six floor, state-of-the-art tower in the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. There are currently 172 inpatient beds including: acute care beds for infants and children, a general adolescent unit, an adolescent psychiatry/dual diagnosis unit, heme/onc unit, same day hospital, 12-bed pediatric intensive care unit, 35-bed neonatal intensive care unit and a 12-bed neonatal intermediate care nursery.

Both medical and surgical patients are admitted and assigned to one of the units based on age and acuity. The Brenner Children’s Hospital includes ample work space for residents with computer access to laboratory and X-ray results, attractive waiting areas for families, a laundry for families of patients, a small house staff laboratory, conference rooms, and a pediatric satellite pharmacy. The Ronald McDonald House is located across the street from the Medical Center and provides a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill children

In addition, the program includes two off-campus health care facilities: Downtown Health Plaza, and Forsyth Medical Center, both of which are located approximately 10 minutes from the main campus.

Downtown Health Plaza is the home to our residency continuity clinics and our general pediatric acute care clinic.  Our residents have clinic for a full day during outpatient and elective months and a half-day during inpatient and intensive care months.   Each continuity clinic day is staffed with two general pediatricians from our general peds faculty, dedicated to teaching evidence-based medicine.  The continuity day begins with a talk on a general topic prepared by faculty and residents alike.

Forsyth Medical Center is the community hospital for Forsyth county and is located just a mile down the road.  99% of deliveries in the county occur at this hospital, therefore we have an alliance between the medical centers which allows our residents to rotate at Forsyth Medical Center for two of their NICU months and a full two months of newborn nursery exposure. The neonatologists and pediatricians the residents work with at Forsyth Medical Center are part of our faculty who share an appointment there as well, so we can insure that our residents are getting the most out of their training.
