Faculty Highlights
Our faculty are among the most distinguished in America and are very active in the academic community. Our faculty current sit on editorial boards for 9 different journals, offer service or consultation to 8 governmental agencies, and Chair two important sections within the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Even in these difficult economic times, our faculty continues to grow, with the addition of 13 new faculty since the fiscal year 2009 in endocrinology, cardiology, general pediatrics, neonatology, hospitalists, genetics, nephrology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease and pulmonology.
Research The Department of Pediatrics had a total dollar award of approximately $15.9 million dollars in fiscal year 2009, with $3.9 million being NIH funded.
- Dr. Savithri Nageswaran was awarded a five-year grant from the federal Health Resources and Services administration entitled Community-Based Care Coordination for Children with Complex Chronic Conditions.
- Dr. Kathi Kemper received a 3 year award from the Hopeman foundation to develop and expand her Program for Complementary and Integrative Medicine.
- Dr. Hernan Sabio received an award from The American Thrombosis & Hemostasis Network entitled ATHN Data Quality Counts which is an effort by the ATHN to jumpstart a national hemophilia database.
- Dr. Thomas McLean received a 1 year Infrastructure Grant to Expand Pediatric Oncology Phase Clinical Trials from the St. Baldricks Foundation.
- Dr. John Fortunato was awarded an industry grant from AstraZeneca studying the Correlation of Oropharyngeal Pepsin and Gastroesophageal.
- Dr. Katherine Poehling was awarded a grant from the NIAID studying the Impact of Vaccine on Influenza Disease in Young Children.
- Dr. Michael O'Shea was awarded a grant studying Mother Administered Interventions for VLBW Infants.
- Dr. Robert Schwartz was awarded a grant studying Brief Motivational Interviewing for BMI Reduction.
- Dr. Joseph Skelton was awarded a grant from The Duke Endowment to further expand the BrennerFIT program.
- Dr. Avinash Shetty was awarded a grant from the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatrics AIDS Foundation studying Prevention of Perinatal HIV in Urban Zimbabwe.

- Dr. Robert Schwarz was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award for Childhood Obesity Prevention from the NC Pediatric Society.
- Dr. Katherine Poehling was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics' Council on Community Pediatrics/Section on Epidemiology.
- Drs. Laurence Givner, Jon Abramson, and Daniel Krowchuk were awarded America's Top Pediatricians by the Consumer's Research Council of America.
- Dr. Jon Abramson was the recipient of the Denny, Katz, Simon, and Tinglestad Academic Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
