Marcia Wofford, MD       Laurie Albertini, MD        Allison McBride, MD

Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Residency Program at Wake Forest University Health Sciences. As you are considering residency programs in general, we encourage you to evaluate each program based on your individual needs, values and goals. We would like to take this opportunity to provide an overview of the philosophy of our residency program, which we gear towards you, the individual.

The post graduate program in pediatrics is designed to foster the transformation of the resident to a competent pediatrician. We believe the following aspects of our program contribute to this transformation. Our residents are:

  • exposed to a large volume of patients from many cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds,
  • exposed to a wide spectrum of pediatric diagnoses
  • expected to develop in graduated stages and to assume increasing levels of responsibility,
  • supported by competent and caring faculty who treat them as colleagues,
  • given opportunities to develop teaching skills through instruction, modeling, and practice,
  • given opportunities to develop research skills through mentorship with scholarly faculty,
  • given practical community experiences to enhance their commitment to child advocacy and their understanding of their patients.

All of these opportunities are accomplished through daily work with a team of attending, medical students, nurses, child life specialists, nutritionists, social workers, other health care specialists and, most importantly, our patients and their families. This team is committed to family-centered care through collaborative reasoning, inquiry and decision making.

Most residency programs provide valuable and even notable opportunities. However, success is critically dependent on the spirit of the residents themselves. In a recent survey of our residents, camaraderie with fellow residents was listed as one of top positive features of this program.   We are proud to say that the strength of our faculty topped that list.

Good luck in your search for the residency program that fits your learning style and personality. This is an exciting time in your career. We look forward to hearing from you.
