International Health:

While in training our residents have the option to participate in an International Health Elective.  Flexibility exists to create your own month long rotation to gain a valuable learning opportunity.  In addition to supporting our residents' aspirations, a number of our faculty participate in international health, giving care to those who need it most.

Julie Martin: "My husband TJ and I have an interest in pursuing a career in international academic medicine. Because of this we pursued an international elective towards the end of my second year of Pediatrics and the end of his third year in Internal Medicine. After following several leads an opportunity presented itself for us to spend a month in a small academic hospital in Bangalore, India. The Pediatrics department at WFUBMC was amazingly supportive in going through the many steps it took for the elective to be approved.

As I have an interest in Infectious Diseases I spent several days in the microbiology lab observing how the hospital processed specimens for various cultures and did antibiotic sensitivites. I attended daily teaching which often consisted of collective reading/ studying directly out of Nelson's Pediatric Textbook as well as some power-point lectures. There were also intense question and answer sessions as they prepare for oral boards. Rounds on the wards highlighted many disease processes we rarely see here such as typhoid fever, neurocystercircosis and tuberculosis. Afternoon checkout involved rounding with all of the attendings and residents on all of the patients in the hospital: NICU, PICU and wards. Other highlights included two days we went out into the community: one to observe their palliative care team and the other a community health initiative run by the family medicine residents.

It was an amazing experience that has been life changing for me. If have found myself re-evaluating the way we allocate resources and how I approach learning and patient care."
