Cancer diagnosis and treatment are emotionally difficult for all concerned. The Comprehensive Cancer Center has two programs designed to address the emotional needs of patients and their families. These programs are unique in offering psychosocial support and counseling service on site allowing for the delivery of mental health service to patients in conjunction with their medical care.
The Cancer Patient Support Program provides social support for cancer survivors and family members with the goal of enhancing quality of life during the diagnosis and treatment process. Services delivered by our professional staff include individual and family counseling, inpatient consultation/liaison work, patient education, appearance consultation, and support groups.
The Psychosocial Oncology Program provides psychological assessment and counseling for patients and family members suffering from more intense psychological disturbance. Patients often need help with symptom management, such as anxiety, depression and family conflict. Additional services include general supportive counseling and specific behavioral procedures, including relaxation training and stress management.
