Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery

image002Pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to correct heart defects in infants and children.  Brenner Children’s Hospital is the only children’s hospital in North Carolina to offer a better technique to fix a common childhood heart defect.  The outpatient procedure – which requires only three or four small incisions in the chest – replaces major surgery to make the repair and correct the condition known as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). It is offered at only a handful of hospitals in the United States.

Dr. Michael Hines, a pediatric heart surgeon, perfected a minimally-invasive surgical technique to repair a common heart defect. He is one of a handful of cardiothoracic surgeons nationwide to offer the procedure to his patients. Dr. Hines is pictured here with Xavier Johnson, and his dad, Terrance, following the toddler's surgery.

For children with poor heart function or defects that cannot be repaired, heart transplantation may be an option. Pediatric anesthesiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons are furthering clinical research to make the heart-lung machine and anesthesia even safer for these patients. Pediatric intensivists assist to provide optimal postoperative care.
