In addition, the pediatric gastroenterologists at Brenner Children’s Hospital are nationally recognized for their treatment of celiac disease, an under-diagnosed illness affecting one in 150-200 people in the United States. Offering the most comprehensive clinic in the Southeast for diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease, Brenner physicians work with children and their families on diet modification and education.

The Pediatric Gastroenterology Specialists

Dr. Ivor Hill, head of the pediatric gastroenterology section at the children’s hospital, has expertise in the care of children with chronic diarrhea and malabsorption syndromes and offers a comprehensive evaluation and treatment program for children with celiac disease.

The children’s hospital also offers the Southeast’s only pediatric referral center for evaluating and managing children with intestinal motility disorders. Dr. John Fortunato has specialized training and expertise in such disorders and heads this unique service. In addition to caring for children with common gastrointestinal disorders and nutrition related problems, he helps children with swallowing disorders and other intestinal motility related abnormalities by tailoring treatment to their individual needs.

Dr. Joseph Skelton is an expert on the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Dr. Skelton shows families how to lead a healthier lifestyle, prevent many serious illnesses, such as heart disease and diabetes, and how making changes can help improve their health for a lifetime. He also conducts and shares eye-opening research on how families can work together to impact their health in a positive way.

“We work with family practitioners and parents to determine the best treatment for the child,” said Dr. Hill. “In addition, we are strongly committed to seeing all new patient referrals in a timely fashion and our goal is to see all such cases within a week of the referral.”
