GENETICS
Medical Genetics offers the region’s only comprehensive spectrum of genetics services, including both clinical diagnosis and on-site genetics laboratories. Three physician clinical geneticists and six genetics counselors provide prenatal, pediatric, adult/familial and cancer diagnoses and genetic counseling.
The nationally recognized, state-of-the-art medical genetics laboratories include cytogenetics, molecular cytogenetics, DNA diagnostics and a large screening program. The molecular laboratories are equipped to perform large-scale sequencing and genotyping studies. An active research program is underway on the genetics of common diseases with a major emphasis on asthma and cancer. Wake Forest University School of Medicine was the first in the nation to establish a Department of Genetics in 1941.
