With three board-certified pediatric general surgeons — the largest pediatric surgical department in the western half of the state — Brenner Children’s Hospital offers infants and children advanced surgical techniques including minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. As adult patients have long known, the benefits of this approach include shorter recovery periods and length of hospital stay, and less pain and scarring. For children, the benefits of laparoscopic surgery in a pediatric hospital include the presence of a full range of pediatric specialists — anesthesiologists, nurses and pharmacists — each trained specifically to care for children.

Laparoscopic surgery is most commonly used to remove organs such as the gallbladder, spleen and appendix, in anti-reflux operations, to evaluate hernias and to place feeding tubes into infants. Thorascopic surgery is used to treat chest infections and evaluate and biopsy lung disease and other chest disorders.

Seven suites in the Surgery Center at Brenner Children’s Hospital are dedicated to the care of children. Brenner Children’s Hospital houses the busiest pediatric surgical center in Western North Carolina and is one of only three pediatric surgical centers in the state.
