Our Facility
Our state-of-the-art children’s hospital, which opened in May of 2002, is designed to provide optimal comfort to both patients and their families. By providing built-in day beds (that convert to couches during the day), private bathrooms and private rooms for each patient, family members enjoy both the comfort of each other and the privacy needed during stressful times. Sleep chairs are provided for parents in the Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit.
Laundry facilities, respite areas and vending areas are located close to patient rooms to provide parents a break, if needed, during their stay. A meditation room for prayer or quiet reflection is available 24 hours a day and the Ronald McDonald Room (located on the sixth floor) is staffed 12 hours a day by volunteers. There, parents can find refreshments, a place to read and visit with other relatives, and an opportunity to check e-mail and communicate with home.
In Brenner Children’s NICU, there are two private family rooms assigned to parents when their infant is ready to go home. These rooms help ease parents’ fears about taking their newborn home the first night. Nurses and physicians are within reach and can be called upon to answer questions and help with the care of the child.
“Staying in that room was a lifesaver,” said Tricia Plaster, first-time mom of Mattie, from Morganton, N.C. “Being first-time parents was nerve-racking enough. My husband and I were so excited about taking Mattie home, but also nervous about not having a nurse or doctor readily available to help us out if we had questions. By staying in the family room one night, we got the dose of confidence we needed to make the journey home in peace.”
