FIT Kits
FIT Kits are a tool that can be used in many different settings (physician’s office, school, health department, clinic) to teach evidence-based ways to improve the health of children and families. For minimal costs, they can be assembled and stored in an office, and quickly be brought out to teach interested and motivated families. They are also flexible, can be customized to fit your needs, and can be used by both professionals and lay persons.
An important component of FIT Kits is to target education and counseling on specific areas a child or family needs to improve. We recommend using the Brenner FIT screening tool (Health Questionnaire) to help identify 4 helpful points:
1. Is there a history of chronic disease in the family?
2. What behaviors are in need of improvement?
3. Is the family ready to make changes?
4. Where would they like to start?
Once a family identifies the behavior they want to change, use the FIT Kit to teach them why that behavior is important to change, and how they can start. FIT Kits follow the evidence-based advice of the Brenner FIT Program (Families in Training), 5-4-3-2-1-0. Each FIT Kit has an engaging teaching tool, a Brenner FIT guide to changing that behavior, and many other handouts and resources to assist yourself and the family in making healthy changes.
