Q: |
“Am I to blame for my child’s weight and health problems?” |
|
A: |
There are many factors that contribute to being obese in childhood. As parents we have our children’s best interests in mind, and want them to be well. You can do something about it, though, and that includes making healthy choices now while your child is developing habits that can last a lifetime.

|
Q: |
“What changes does my family need to make?” |
|
A: |
Changes in eating habits and physical activity are the most important factors for healthy weight management. However, other factors (such as ways to handle stressful situations) contribute to health and may also need to be addressed. Make changes in small, gradual steps to increase the chances for success.

|
Q: |
“Does my child need to lose weight?” |
|
A: |
It depends. Your child’s age, height, weight, and medical factors will determine if weight loss is necessary. For kids, keeping weight the same may be all that is needed to improve their health. Younger children that are overweight or obese need to slow down their weight gain, or maintain their present weight. Older teens may need to lose weight.

|
Q: |
“Does my family or child have to join a fitness center to be healthy and lose weight?” |
|
A: |
No. There are many ways for your child and family to be active. Gyms can be a great way for a family to get active and be healthy. For younger children, regular play is what is important. Play is great because they move all of their muscles at once and don’t even realize they are “exercising.” Plus, its free! The important part is to be active as a family.

|
A: |
At your child’s first visit, the whole family will be meeting with a physician, physical therapist, dietitian, and a counselor. You and yourr child will follow up with these team members as needed. Referrals to other specialists may be made.
As we are a teaching institution, we often have students and trainees spending time with us, and may be present for some of your visits, but your family will always see the Brenner FIT team at each visit.

Q: |
“How often does my child and family need to come back?” |

The need for follow up is determined based on your child’s needs. Typically, children are seen every 2-3 weeks for about 4 months. As lifestyle changes are made, the time between appointments will be lengthened.
