Choosing the right pediatrician for your child is extremely important. When deciding on a pediatrician or a pediatric specialist consider the following:

·        Two of the most important qualities you should look for in a pediatrician competence and compassion.

·        Board certification, which means that a pediatrician has done a residency in a particular specialty, is one credential to check.

·        Check the credentials of the pediatrician with the state medical association and with the American Board of Medical Specialists.

·        Ask about particular procedures the pediatrician has had experience with. Does the pediatrician specialize in the illness or procedure facing your child? How many of these procedures does the pediatrician perform each year?

·         Ask friends or relatives if they know of others who have been seen by the pediatrician in question. Phone the parents of these children to find out what their experiences have been.
