Back to School Safety Tips
It's back-to-school time! Safety should be a priority for
every family. Parents should take time now to talk to their children about
safety before they head out for school whether walking, biking or riding the
school bus.
Walking to School
- Walk on the sidewalk if one is available.
- If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic.
- Cross the street at corners using traffic signals and
crosswalks.
- Look left, right, and left again as you cross the street and
hold an adult's hand if you are less than 10-years-old.
- Walk, don’t run, and don’t run out between parked cars.
Riding a Bike to School
- Always wear a helmet when riding your bike.
- Make sure your helmet fits properly.
- Obey all traffic rules and signals; ride on the right side
of the road.
Riding the Bus to School
- When the bus arrives, stand at least three giant steps (6
feet) away from the curb.
- Respect the “Danger Zone”. Stay at least 10 feet away from
the bus.
- Never walk behind the bus; make sure the driver can see you.
- Make sure drawstrings and other loose objects are secure
before getting off the bus.
