Brenner Children’s Hospital Pediatrician Edits Book on Pediatric Dermatologic Diseases

November 15, 2006

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Daniel Krowchuk, M.D., a pediatrician at Brenner Children’s Hospital, has edited a book, “Pediatric Dermatology: A Quick Reference Guide” for family physicians, pediatricians and others who provide primary care for children. The book is available beginning this month through the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“The book addresses conditions and disorders that pediatricians and other primary care providers are likely to see,” he said. “It also covers many of the more unusual diagnoses. It is designed to help physicians how to recognize a condition, make the diagnosis, and then manage it.”

One of the most helpful parts of the book includes information on how to differentiate between two diagnoses, Krowchuk said. “Sometimes two conditions can look very much alike but can be caused by two different things.”

A section on “Resources for Families” follows each key diagnosis and helps physicians point family members to helpful websites and other resources for more information.

The book was published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and can be purchased on their website www.aap.org or on www.amazon.com. Anthony Mancini, M.D., a pediatric dermatologist with Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, helped co-write this book.

Almost 20 percent of visits to pediatricians and family physicians are related to dermatologic conditions. Dermatitis, eczema and acne are among the most common diagnoses, Krowchuk said.
