The Brenner Children's Difference

At Brenner Children’s Emergency Department (ED), your child’s emergency care doesn’t begin when he or she enters an operating room; it starts the moment you walk into our emergency department. The pediatric ED has been specifically designed to make sure your child’s stay is as comfortable as possible and focused on giving him or her the best care possible.

The commitment of our pediatric ED is to be prepared to care for infants and children with all types of emergent medical needs. When needed, we begin the process of sedation and pain management right away and ensure your child is diagnosed as fast as possible by experts in the field. This means that your child will receive the treatment and care he or she needs in the least amount of time possible, which strengthens outcomes, decreases recovery time and minimizes pain.

The Right Tools and Expertise for Your Child

When you’re choosing a place to take your child for emergency care, you don’t get a chance to select a doctor. What you’re selecting is a place. At Brenner Children's Hospital, our pediatric specialists have made a commitment to caring for children. Be assured that our doctors, whether he or she is a surgeon, radiologist, anesthesiologist, gastroenterologist or other specialist, are highly skilled doctor trained in pediatric care who has made a commitment to caring for children.

Our pediatric emergency physicians and other health care professionals have the expertise needed to provide exceptional care for your child. For example, we have experience stabilizing children who are having seizures and we know how to insert an IV in a child who is dehydrated and has difficult to reach veins. We’re able to provide quick and accurate diagnoses using our broad range of resources and expertise.

Simple X-Rays, CT scans and other diagnostic tools only provide limited information, and give your child unnecessary exposure to radiation. At Brenner Children’s pediatric ED, you have access to pediatric radiologists who know how to efficiently and safely use diagnostic tools for children and can see subtleties or uncommon occurrences that might be missed by those that aren’t experts in the field.

Our pediatric ED was designed from the ground up to care for children only. Each diagnostic tool, each surgical device and each treatment tool is made just for children, something that makes a big difference when seconds count and precision is essential.

Managing Your Child’s Pain and Comfort Levels

Making sure that your child is comfortable, especially when he or she is facing a traumatic experience, is priceless. Caring for a child with an urgent medical need is not just selecting the right antibiotic or surgical procedure; it’s also paying attention to your child’s emotional and physical comfort.

We place the highest priority on pain control; from the moment you walk into our pediatric ED, pain management is a part of the environment you are entering. Our rooms are designed just for children. We have pediatric doses of pain medication readily available and our emergency medicine physicians are ready to provide your child with the right pain medication dose for his or her size and condition to ensure we are able to safely provide diagnosis and treatment, as well as minimize unnecessary pain.

Our doctors and other health care professionals are specifically trained in ways to help children who are anxious about being in an emergency room. We have the medications, tools and training necessary to help minimize that anxiety, and the correct sedation measures to help patients who are facing more serious medical emergencies.
