Bowel Rehabilitation for Improved Digestion, Growth, and Elimination (BRIDGE) Program

The BRIDGE program provides multi-disciplinary care for patients with short bowel syndrome.

Short bowel syndrome is a disorder resulting from the loss of small bowel due to a variety of causes. This includes diseases such as:

    • Necrotizing enterocolitis
    • Intestinal atresias
    • Gastroschisis
    • Intestinal malrotation, and
    • Hirschsprung’s disease

Trauma also can result in an insufficient length of small intestine to support adequate nutrition and growth.

Additional causes of intestinal failure include disorders of motility and absorption in which a normal length of intestine is present but it can’t function well enough to support the body’s nutritional needs.

Patients with short bowel syndrome require complex care from a variety of specialists including:

    • Gastroenterologists
    • Pediatric surgeons
    • Registered dietitians
    • Pharmacists
    • Speech therapists
    • Developmental pediatricians
    • Nurses
    • Nurse practitioners, and
    • Social workers

The Brenner Children's BRIDGE program is a dedicated team of specialists working together to provide comprehensive individualized care to meet the needs of each unique patient.
