Clinical Services

The nephrology unit at Brenner is the region’s leading program for pediatric nephrology; our clinicians diagnose and treat children of all ages for all types of kidney-related conditions. Our pediatric nephrologists and nurses have years of specialized experience in caring for children with all types of congenital and acquired kidney conditions and diseases. Each day we provide diagnosis and treatment for children with acute kidney failure, urinary tract infections, dysplastic kidneys, renal tubular acidosis and many other conditions that affect the kidney.

Family-Centered Care

At Brenner, we believe in the philosophy of family-centered care. We work closely with families to develop individualized and customized treatment plans for their child and are always available to answer any questions parents and other family members may have. The nephrologists at Brenner work closely with our patients and their families to find the best possible method for care and treatment. In addition, Brenner’s pediatric nephrologists work closely with our patients’ pediatricians and other specialists to provide streamlined care throughout the treatment and healing process.

Pediatric Nephrology Services at Brenner Children’s Hospital

Brenner Children’s Hospital provides specialized renal care services for pediatric patients of all ages in our NICU, PICU and other renal care clinical areas. We use the latest in advanced technology to diagnose and treat our patients. Our clinicians and specially trained nurses, nutritionists and social workers work together to ensure we provide the highest level of care for our patients. We have a team of dedicated acute dialysis nurses available 24/7.

Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is treatment in which a pump circulates a patient’s blood through tubing to a semipermeable membrane and then returns the blood to the patient.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis is dialysis that uses the patient’s peritoneal membrane, the lining inside the abdominal cavity that covers some of the major organs and the intestines.

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)

CRRT is a treatment option used in patients that cannot tolerate a regular, four-hour hemodialysis treatment.

Kidney Transplants

In a kidney transplant, we place a new kidney in a child whose own kidneys have failed to take over the work of cleaning the blood. Our nephrology team works very closely with our pediatric transplant surgery team to help children who need kidney transplants.

Kidney Biopsy

Kidney biopsy is a procedure to obtain kidney tissue from children with kidney disease for diagnosis and guidance of treatment. Our nephrologists perform this procedure with the assistance of our pediatric radiology team.

Anesthesia

A fully dedicated team of pediatric anesthesiologists, trained for many years in the specialties of pediatrics and anesthesia, work with all pediatric departments to ensure the best and safest anesthesia plan for our pediatric patients. We conduct all types of anesthesia, including local, regional and general anesthesia:

  • Local Anesthesia – the numbing of a certain area or part of the body.
  • Regional Anesthesia – a type of anesthesia in which the anesthesiologist injects a medicine to block pain signals traveling to the brain. This may involve the spine, an epidural or nerve blocks. This procedure will make a child feel sleepy before, during and after the procedure.
  • General Anesthesia – medicines are given to a child to make him or her sleep during surgery. During general anesthesia, the anesthesia team closely watches the child’s heartbeat, blood pressure, breathing and oxygen levels and may adjust the levels of medication as needed during the procedure.
