The nephrology unit at Brenner is the region’s leading program for pediatric nephrology; our clinicians diagnose and treat children of all ages for all types of kidney-related conditions. Our pediatric nephrologists and nurses have specialized experience in caring for children with all types of congenital and acquired kidney conditions and diseases. We treat hundreds of children each year for conditions such as acute kidney failure, urinary tract infections, dysplastic kidneys, renal tubular acidosis and many other conditions that affect the kidney. When are you available?

A pediatric nephrologist is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for emergencies. Our office hours are from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. To schedule an appointment, new patients should call 888-716-WAKE or 336-716-WAKE. Returning patients, please call 336-713-4500.

What do you treat?

The pediatric nephrologists at Brenner are highly trained specialists with access to the latest in state-of-the-art technology. We work with specialists throughout Brenner Children’s Hospital to provide surgical care for a wide range of kidney-related problems in children of all ages. Can my child get kidney dialysis at a location near my home?

Yes, we run and manage a number of outpatient dialysis centers throughout western North Carolina, so that your child can access dialysis services close to your home.

Is my child going to be okay?

Our pediatric nephrologists are experts in their field and have been caring for children with kidney conditions and disorders for many years. We use the latest in clinical and technological advancements in the care of our patients and will do all that is medically possible to ensure your child has the best possible outcome during his or her period of care at Brenner Children’s Hospital. In addition, we manage a thorough follow-up care program and work closely with your pediatrician and other pediatric specialists to ensure continued optimal care and treatment for your child.

How often do we need to see you?

Your treatment schedule will depend upon your child’s surgery and condition. Your pediatric nephrologist or primary physician will work with you to set up a schedule that fits your schedule and your child’s specific health care needs.

Can my child play sports and participate in the things they love to do?

Our goal is to see your child enjoy life. We will do everything possible to get your child back to doing his or her favorite things. Certain conditions and treatments may, however, limit your child’s ability to participate in some sports and other physical activities. Your doctor will provide you with this guidance in detail during your child’s period of care.
