Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Therapy for Children in North Carolina

Our speech-language pathologists provide speech, language and feeding therapy for infants and children who have a cleft lip or palate. One of the most common birth defects, cleft lip or palate happens when parts of the face do not fuse together as they should during embryological development.

Feeding Therapy for Babies with Cleft                                     Cleft Palate_125px

A cleft lip or palate makes it challenging for a baby to eat. An infant with a cleft palate may not be able to "suck" as other infants do, making it difficult to get essential nutrients that babies need. We provide feeding evaluations, recommendations and follow-up care for families and their babies. Often, we recommend special bottles, feeding systems or different feeding positions that can help facilitate the feeding process.

Multidisciplinary Care for Cleft Palate Patients

Our speech-language pathologists work in interdisciplinary teams with plastic surgeons, ENT/head and neck surgeons, audiologists, geneticists, orthodontists and dentists. We are specially trained to help children with a cleft lip or palate that have challenges with speech. Through evaluations and therapy, we teach the child to make early-developing speech sounds correctly, and we continue to monitor speech resonance as he or she grows.
