Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Residency Program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. As you consider residency programs in general, we encourage you to evaluate each program based on your individual needs, values and goals.

Our program is designed around you, the resident with your individual goals, needs, and career plans. We are a community of adult learners who strive to provide quality patient care while strengthening our knowledge, skills and attitudes towards each patient and the greater medical system. Brenner Children's Hospital provides a unique training location. As a tertiary care center in a small southern city our patients are socioeconomically and culturally diverse. We have a large catchment area for referrals in Northwest North Carolina and Southwestern Virginia in addition to “bread and butter” pediatric patients from the community.

    Our residents:

    • Are supported by competent and caring faculty who treat them as colleagues
    • Develop teaching skills through instruction, modeling, and practice
    • Have opportunity to hone research skills through mentorship with scholarly faculty
    • Have practical community experiences to enhance their commitment to child advocacy and their understanding of their patients
    • Are given graduated autonomy and assume increasing levels of responsibility as they progress through the curriculum

All of these opportunities are accomplished through daily work with a team of attendings, medical students, nurses, child life specialists, nutritionists, social workers, other health care specialists and, most importantly, our patients and their families. In both inpatient and outpatient settings, our teams are committed to family-centered care through collaborative reasoning, inquiry and decision making.

In a recent survey of our residents, camaraderie with fellow residents was listed as one of top positive features of this program. We are proud to say that the strength of our faculty and their relationships with the residents also topped that list. We have an “open-door” environment that allows our program to be resident-focused and driven.

Good luck in your search for the residency program that fits your learning style and personality. This is an exciting time in your career. We look forward to hearing from you.
